Chemistry SKE
Our online Chemistry SKE is a flexible course, allowing you to address gaps in your knowledge of Chemistry at GCSE and A-level. You鈥檒l also be able to address your understanding of KS3 Physics and Biology.
Study a Chemistry SKE course at Sussex
We offer a range of units for trainees, from KS3 to A-Level. All are supported by excellent interactive “SnapRevise” resources. You will have access to all three sciences at GCSE and your specialist subject at A-level. You can to refer to the resources whenever you need them in your training year – even after your SKE is complete.
Course structure
The Sussex online Chemistry SKE is available as either a Department for Eduacation (DfE) funded or . The course lengths available are:
- DfE funded: eight, 12, 16. 20, 24 or 28 weeks
- self-funded: 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600 or 700 hours.
Once you have enrolled, you will be able to select from the following four-week units:
- KS3 Science (focussed on developing your non-specialist sciences to KS3 standard)
- KS3/KS4 Practical Science (Practical Science Skills across the 3 Sciences, but specialising in Chemistry)
- GCSE Chemistry - Atomic Structure, Periodic Table, Bonding, Quantitative Chemistry
- GCSE Chemistry - Chemical Changes, Rates, Organic Chemistry, Chemical Analysis
- A-Level Chemistry - Physical Chemistry, Bonding, Energetics, Rates and REDOX
- A-Level Chemistry - Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry
- A-Level Chemistry - Physical Chemistry II
- A-Level Chemistry - Inorganic Chemistry II, Organic Chemistry I
Eligibility and funding
There are two possible funding routes for this course – DfE-funded or self-funded.
DfE-funded route
SKE courses are funded by the Department for Education (DfE), through an SKE bursary, if you have been offered a place on a PGCE course with enrolment on an SKE course as a condition of acceptance.
You will need one of the following qualifications:
- a bachelor’s degree class 2:2 or above
- a master’s degree
- a PhD.
The SKE bursary is paid in arrears, on completion of each 4-week unit. Once you are registered you will be able to access details of our deadlines and payment dates.
We can only pay the bursary once your teacher training provider has confirmed your eligibility and the DfE have approved the claim (we will do this on your behalf).
If you are still completing your degree, we cannot make any payments until your final grade has been confirmed and sent to us.

If you’re not eligible for DfE funding, you can self-fund this SKE.

In addition to input from specialist subject tutors you will also receive:
- a physical copy of a GCSE and/or A-level textbook, as well as a revision guide.
- a full subscription to the excellent materials, an interactive course of videos and short assessments (You will have access to all 3 sciences for GCSE and the materials for A-level in your specialist subject. You’ll retain access to these until the end of your training year)

- access to thousands of relevant physical and e-books through our Library
- licensed software such as Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Pro
- access to , a huge collection of documentaries, schools TV, films and drama that you can stream for free.
