Therapeutic Work with Children and Young People (PA 3) (X3252)

15 credits, Level 6

Autumn teaching

This module will introduce you with an introduction to the theoretical ideas and professional practices that underpin different forms of therapeutic work with children and young people.

This module considers how therapeutic informed practice influences the practice of people that work with children. It critically engages with the theoretical frameworks and research that support different approaches to working therapeutically with children and young people in a variety of professional contexts such as schools and family centres.

This module introduces a range of applications of talk, play and arts based psychological therapies. It overviews psychodynamic, person centred and relational theoretical constructions for working with the therapeutic relationship. It introduces play therapy, systemic, cognitive, group-work, bereavement support and mindfulness approaches and active listening skills. It explores professional issues such as school-based counselling and multi-professional practice, working with families and children’s networks, supervision and safeguarding.

The implications and value of these ideas for practitioners from a variety of professionals, notably, teachers, social workers and youth workers will be considered.
