Analysis 1 (G5135)
15 credits, Level 4
Autumn teaching
Starting from the concept of limit of a sequence, learn how it is possible to give a precise meaning to the concepts of "infinite", "infinitely small", and "infinitely large". You will also learn how to work with series, and understand how these tools can be applied to define limits of functions.
You will see some of the concepts that you have covered in school in a new light, and analyse them in great depth. You will learn how to give rigorous proofs of mathematical statements, and how to sketch the graph of a function. This module will pave the way for what will later be covered in Analysis 2.
Having a good understanding of analysis will prepare you to deal with modern mathematics that is used in branches of science, physics, biology, probability, and finance.

Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 42 hours of contact time and about 108 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We鈥檙e planning to run these modules in the academic year 2024/25. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
We鈥檒l make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
