Strengthening Children's Mathematical Understanding (X6605)

15 credits, Level 5

Autumn teaching

On this module, you'll focus on models, strategies, and approaches to enhance the teaching and learning of mathematics in primary and early years settings.

You'll explore key questions such as:

  • how can the use of manipulative models and visual representations support and link children’s conceptual and procedural understanding of mathematics?
  • how can learning through play, rich texts, and purposeful real-life activities help with children’s reasoning and problem-solving?
  • how is the teaching of mathematics in the east influencing current policy and practice?

You’ll also reflect on your experiences with mathematical learning in the classroom and consider the application of both established pedagogies and new innovations.
