Finance and Power (L2069A)

Autumn teaching

In this module, you’ll consider the globalisation of finance and the structure of the power relations that drive it. You'll examine the ways in which global finance is constructed on the basis of power struggles and how financialisation empowers certain actors over others.

You’ll start by examining various forms of financial systems and their social ramifications. You'll then examine how the process of globalisation affects the evolution of these financial systems, and the social struggles over the direction of change.

You’ll address the impacts of financialisation on the project of development, the convergence of various economic systems and the formulation of progressive politics.

Finally, you'll consider the regulation of finance and the various challenges it raises for political authorities and social forces.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 300 hours of work. This breaks down into about 36 hours of contact time and about 264 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
