About Film Studies

Our researchers study global screen cultures and contexts, film history and contemporary cinema and critical and theoretical approaches to audiovisual media.

We have pioneered innovative methods of film analysis and critique, linking film to digital in both our research and our practice, and we are also active in film production.

We produce monographs and collections, audiovisual forms of film studies, contribute to key international journals, engage in joint research projects with external partners, programme and curate film festivals and exhibitions, and contribute to international forums and conferences.

Our flexible approach to study draws on the fields of English, History, Cultural Studies, Anthropology and Art History.

We offer specialist facilities to our staff and students, and access to equipment 24 hours a day, seven days a week – including more than 5,000 films and documentaries.

Our links with production and film companies, and one of the UK’s oldest purpose-built cinemas, the Duke of York’s Picture House, means our teaching is always up to date with the latest developments in the industry.
