Biography

Ben Hunter joined Sussex in 2019 as Lecturer in International Development. He holds degrees from King's College London (PhD), London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (MSc) and the University of Cambridge (BA).

Ben works at the intersection of health and development, with a particular interest in how new areas of commercial exchange emerge in the health sector. He has experience working on research projects in India, China and the UK, and he has been awarded research grants by the UK Economic and Social Research Council and the Wellcome Trust. Current projects examine:

  • growth of private investment in global healthcare
  • strategic efforts to position countries within a globalised commercial healthcare economy
  • formal and informal systems of brokerage that facilitate access to healthcare

Prior to joining Sussex, Ben was a Research and Teaching Fellow in the King's College London Department of International Development, where he taught undergraduate and postgraduate students and worked on a study of healthcare system transformation in Maharashtra, India. In his PhD at King's, Ben used a qualitative research approach to examine how development aid was used to promote healthcare markets in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Alongside his doctoral studies, Ben worked part-time as a researcher for the UK All-Party Parliamentary Group on Population, Development and Reproductive Health and collaborated on several research projects in the field of global health. These include AusAID- and WHO-funded systematic reviews on the use of vouchers and cash transfers to promote maternal health, and analyses with the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria on its support for harm reduction.
