Groups visiting Special Collections

We have a new Special Collections Website

Our new website was launched in 2010, and allows searching across all our collections and view records for all our items. You can access the site at the following address: .

These pages are available for reference and are no longer being updated. They may contain out of date information.

Group VisitsGroup visiting Special Collections

We are happy to host group visits to the collections. Special Collections has its own seminar room and can offer a variety of seminars and talks for schools, student groups and other local and national organisations. Special Collections staff are available to lead these sessions and will consult with the group organiser to tailor the visit accordingly.

We are able to accommodate up to 16 visitors at any one time. Appointments for group visits should be made at least one month in advance. Group visits usually last from 1.5 to 2 hours, with a break if desired.

Selected items from the Collections can be made available to handle and read, and short exercises (interpreting the documents, discussing use of evidence and so on) are usually included if relevant.

Using the collections for teaching

Tutors and teachers are welcome to contact staff to discuss how the collections may be incorporated in their teaching. This can include a combination of a group visit to introduce students to using collections and subsequent visits by students as individual researchers. Further information on this is available under our Academic Services information page.

Charges

Charges take account of staff time not only in giving the talks and supervising the sessions but also in the preparation of materials and the re-filing after the visit.

A charge of £50 will normally be made for a 2 hour visit.

No charge is made for group visits by staff and students of the University of Sussex.
