Introduction

Journalist C R Hewitt, under the pen-name C H Rolph, wrote Kingsley Martin’s official biography, Kingsley: The life, letters and diaries of Kingsley Martin (Gollancz, 1973). The University acquired his papers in 1989. One set relates directly to the biography and includes correspondence from before and after its publication. A second set was generated by his association with the New Statesman and includes copies of Rolph’s articles.

Originally a policeman, Hewitt left the force in 1945 having attained the rank of Chief Inspector. A vice-president of the Howard League for Penal Reform, legal matters became his specialisation after moving into journalism, as represented in the Archive by the many files of legal queries sent in by readers.
