Tutors
The School employs tutors to support the delivery of teaching across all years.
Most tutors are employed as either Doctoral or School tutors and contracts are issued by Human Resources (HR).
Visit the Tutor Hub for general resources, guidance, and information about mandatory training for all tutors.

Advertising tutor vacancies
A list of modules requiring tutor support will be emailed by Catherine Warden to all PhD students and to others who may be interested or have the required expertise.
Autumn term teaching: vacancies to be circulated end of July Allocations finalised by mid-end August.
Spring term teaching: vacancies to be circulated November. Allocations finalised by mid December.
Tutor allocation
Allocation of tutors is at the discretion of the Head of Department, who will make an academic judgement considering the suitability and ‘match’ of each tutor with departmental needs.
Module convenors may choose to appoint their own PhD supervisees who already work within their own field of expertise.
Tutors who have previously taught a module may be offered the same module to preserve and develop knowledge and reduce the burden of preparation and administrative work.
Module convenors will conduct a short interview to assess your suitability for the post. Catherine will then let you know the teaching schedule and the breakdown of hours. Once agreed, you will be contacted by HR to confirm the details of your contract and to complete right to work checks. You should read this email carefully as it will contain detailed information about your contract, including legal requirements and compulsory GDPR training. You should reply promptly. You must not start work until all checks are complete.
Induction and supervision
An initial induction session will cover general information about the role of tutors in the Department. It will set out the standards of professional conduct expected of tutors and give guidelines on delivery of teaching support, dealing with students, and marking of assignments.
The module convenor will coordinate and supervise all tutors on their module. This will include:
- An initial meeting before teaching starts covering planning of delivery
- Familiarisation with the Canvas site, module assignments and submission deadlines, assessment criteria and marking schemes
- Allocation of marking load
- Guidance and supervision on marking and feedback
- Guidance on attendance monitoring
- Health & Safety for working in John Clifford West, Richmond 2D02 and the Mechatronics lab.
