In this module you’ll confront fundamental questions about what makes life meaningful such as is it bad to die? Would immortality be good? Does it matter if you’re stuck in the Matrix? Are you really free?

You’ll also engage with fundamental moral questions relating to animal rights and human rights. You’ll develop your ability to apply philosophical thinking to real world problems in order to benefit society.

Module learning outcomes

  • Characterise some central positions in first-order ethics.
  • Characterise some central positions in meta-ethics.
  • Evaluate the familiar arguments for and against these central positions.
  • Argue for the student's own view of the philosophical issues raised in the module.
