Human Rights

Module L2124A

Module details for 2021/22.

30 credits

FHEQ Level 6

Module Outline

This module introduces you to key, interdisciplinary approaches to the philosophical and historical evolution, and contemporary forms and uses, of human rights – beyond a legal positivist approach. The module deliberately sets a slow pace to allow for in-depth engagement with key texts in the study of human rights. Using monographs, podcasts and videos/film, the module’s focus is on the multi-faceted and contingent ways in which human rights are socially enacted (defined, claimed, interpreted, challenged, implemented and monitored), as well as the possibilities and limitations of human rights to realise their utopian potential.

Module learning outcomes

Systematically understand and critically evaluate key scholarly approaches to the philosophical and historical evolution, and contemporary forms, of human rights.

Extend and apply theoretical understanding to specific contexts in the analysis of human rights practice.

Manage and consolidate your own learning: Demonstrate the ability to research, synthesise and make arguments on specific themes and materials related to the module

Communicate your arguments to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
