Module 819F8

Module details for 2024/25.

45 credits

FHEQ Level 7 (Masters)

Module Outline

This module provides students with the opportunity to complete under expert supervision an
independent piece of research of 10.000 words on a topic of their choosing relevant to the themes of
the Migration and Global Development MA or Migration and Refugee Studies MA. The dissertation
may involve either an original empirical study involving primary data collection (which might include
fieldwork if students wish to, and which we anticipate would be done during the summer term
following requisite ethics clearance), or research based on secondary data sources.

In preparation for their dissertation, as part of the separate Research Skills module, students will
receive training in research methods, dissertation planning, and writing and prepare a Research
Outline. Each student is also allocated a dissertation supervisor, who will help them prepare for their
research, develop their problematic, and supervise their independent research and writing through
four, 30 minutes, one-on-one supervisions.

Module learning outcomes

Identify and develop a research question relevant to the field of the
programme of study.
