This course is set at Level 7 (Masters) in the national Framework for Higher Education Qualifications.

Course Aims

This programme aims to produce postgraduate students who can enter the e-commerce/e-business sector with appropriate IT skills, i.e. both information technology skills, and e-commerce/e-business skills, focused on technology and innovation management that will be invaluable to the new e-based service economies. It also aims to provide a sound introduction to research in information technology, computer science, and technology innovation and management related to e-commerce and e-business.

Applicants should have a good background in computing, information technology or any engineering discipline with a reasonable programming content. Students with a business-related degree may be accepted provided they have some programming experience.

Students are introduced to theoretical issues in information technology, e-commerce/e-business and technology innovation, and to practical techniques for designing and implementing information technology and e-commerce/e-business systems using a variety of high-level languages and methodologies.

The course is organised around a core of compulsory courses leaving a wide choice of optional courses, including courses from managing innovation, human computer interaction, artificial intelligence, data mining, web base commerce, software design and evaluation, managing innovation in complex products and systems, e-business and others.

Students will benefit from working in an interdisciplinary research environment and from being taught by specialists from a range of disciplines in the Department of Informatics and the Science Policy Research Unit.

In the final project students build a substantial IT or e-Commerce project or write a dissertation focused on associated technology or e-Commerce/e-Business processes or systems under the supervision of experienced faculty.

Having completed the course, students will have the knowledge, skills and competences to take full advantage of innovations in this rapidly developing area.

Course learning outcomes

Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the concepts, principles and theories of Information Technology, Technology and Innovation Management, Computing, Software Engineering, and Internet Technologies applied to E-Commerce and E-Business Systems.

Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the current scientific approaches to understanding Information Technology, Technology and Innovation Management, Computing, Software Engineering, and Internet Technologies applied to E-Commerce and E-Business Systems.

Evaluate and critically analyse information and argument from a range of disciplines related to course subject areas.

Analyse and solve problems related to their expertise in course subject areas.

Demonstrate their ability to extend their basic knowledge to encompass new principles and practice.

Demonstrate their computing, technical and theoretical skills by developing or analysing a substantial system related to the course subject areas.

Plan, conduct and report on the development of an Information Technology or E-Commerce/E-business system.
