Do you want to actively create a more sustainable future – either on campus or in your local community?
Come and take part in Sustainable Sussex Fortnight from 15-29 April 2024 and see what we are doing to be more sustainable at Sussex and how you can be sustainable too.
This year we’re back working in partnership with Sussex Student Union for Climate Justice Week 22-28 April 2024! to see what the SU have planned!
Throughout Sustainable Sussex Fortnight, you could win to spend on campus by attending this year’s events*. Simply scan the QR codes found at selected events to be in for a chance to win!

Week 1 – Sustainable Sussex
Tuesday 16 April,
Green Futures
2.00pm - 6.15pm, Student Centre
An exciting new sustainable careers event! Your opportunity to find out about green jobs, hear from inspirational speakers and take part in a mini sustainability challenge. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Wednesday 17 April
Sustainability Team Stall
12.00pm – 2.00pm, Library Square
Come along and chat to the Sustainability Team about your thoughts, concerns, and ideas to make Sussex more sustainable!
Exploring 'Wicked Sustainability Challenges' at Sussex- Education
1.00pm- 4.00pm, 120 Bramber House
Join SSRP Fellows Dr Perpetua Kirby and Dr Rebecca Webb (School of Education and Social Work) to look at ‘wicked problems’ beyond learning, advocating for Education fit for Sussex Sustainability Challenges of the 21st Century.
Thursday 18 April
Community Orchard Care Tutorial
3.30pm - 4.15pm, location provided on confirmation
Sign up for this tutorial to help care for our new trees, learn about orchards and take a break in the sunshine (hopefully!). We’re also looking for ongoing volunteers, could this be you?

Earth Day Student Webinar

A crash course in sustainability at Sussex. From learning about the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and how the University ranks against them, to the importance of nature and how you can get involved in biodiversity projects on campus.

'How to Grow Food from Waste' Workshop 1

Join our workshop to discover how to transform overlooked ingredients in your kitchen into a health-conscious start to the year—a second "crop" of nutritious, homegrown delights. Turn your kitchen scraps into a thriving garden!
Workshop: 'How to Keep Your Super Market Herbs Alive' Workshop 1

Are your supermarket herb plants struggling to survive? Learn the secrets to keeping them vibrant and healthy in our workshop. From sunlight exposure to proper watering, we'll cover essential care tips for each herb variety.

Pitch for the Planet
2.00pm - 4.30pm, Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts
Join Will Attenborough to hear the next generation of social entrepreneurs pitch their solutions to some of our time’s biggest sustainability challenges. Hear from sustainability, innovation and entrepreneur experts with guest speakers including Jessica Banks from the Entrepreneurship Team and Dr Matt Montgomery Head of Sustainability. Come along and be the first to hear this year’s winning Pitch for the Planet! .
Exploring Sustainability: what issues matter to the lives of children and young people?
1.00 - 3.30pm, Ship Street Brighton
This community workshop will explore sustainability research that is important to the lives of children and young people. Bringing together community organisations, young people, and researchers, this event aims to explore complex sustainability issues where answers are not straightforward.

Staff Sustainability Webinar
2.00 – 3.00pm, Online
Join Dr Matt Montgomery, our new Head of Sustainability, as we discuss how to take sustainability action through your work and in your day to day life, from digital energy use, to recycling in your office.
Week 3 – Sustainable Sussex
Monday 29 April
Campus Nature Walk - discover our biodiversity!
2.15pm - 4.45pm, On Campus
Join us for a guided walk around campus biodiversity hotspots and be part of a worldwide citizen science event, City Nature Challenge, to record campus biodiversity. Make observations and upload photo evidence of what you see in some of our most biodiverse areas on campus. This will be the perfect opportunity for students and staff to get involved and practise biorecording with iNaturalist!
Join in on the Campus Nature Walk and you’ll get a free coffee or money towards a drink at the bar with EcoGo!
