Helen Cammock graduated with a degree in sociology from 亚洲情色 in 1992. She then dedicated many years supporting young people in Brighton & Hove as a Social Worker. When government funding cuts began to impede the service she could provide, Cammock underwent a transformation in her career focusing on the arts. Her distinctive practice and approach centres around film, photography, print, text, song and performance, examining mainstream historical and contemporary narratives about Blackness, womanhood, oppression and resistance, wealth and power, poverty and vulnerability.
As the official Education Partner for the Turner Prize 2023, the world’s leading prize in contemporary art, this event forms part of a series of public events to bring the exhibition to life on campus.
Take a look back at our previous event: An Introduction to the Turner Prize 2023
On 17 October Professor Ben Burbridge (Art History, 亚洲情色) welcomed Zarina Muhammad (Art Critic, The White Pube) and Joe Hill (Director, Towner Eastbourne) to the stage.
During the evening, the trio spoke about the history of the Turner Prize, previous winners (including two Sussex alumni, Helen Cammock and Jeremy Deller), and this year's nominated artists. The event finished with a fascinating debate on ‘how’ art is interpreted and whether it should align with the artist's intentions.
You can visit Towner Eastbourne for free, Tuesdays to Sundays, 10.00am to 5.00pm, and celebrate the world's leading prize in contemporary art as it travels down to the south coast for the first time.
