Lecturer in Media Practice Micheál O’Connell, whose artistic practice is often carried out under the moniker Mocksim, has two upcoming solo exhibitions of 'System Interference' in Ireland, later this year.
System Interference has been described as ‘mainly a mashup of three elements relating to aspects of the contemporary landscape: the increasing presence of wind farms, the road system with its traffic flows which have crept up over a century, and observations on ball-games, specifically golf and the unusual sport of road bowling (played almost exclusively in counties Cork and Armagh)’. The works arguably engage with environmental concerns, the democracy (or lack of it) in decision-making, and what is given priority and what is not.
Funded by Arts Council Ireland, System Interference will run from 19 August – 5 October 2023, Wexford Arts Centre, and 25 November 2023 – 17 February 2024, Highlanes Gallery Drogheda.
To mark the opening of System Interference, Micheál will be in conversation with prominent folklorist Michael Fortune on 26 August at Wexford Arts Centre,
