When I first came to Sussex, my biggest fear was the language barrier. I was particularly worried about British academic culture, as I had never experienced writing in English back home, let alone writing in an academic manner.  

Before coming to Sussex my main job was as a journalist which required me to write a lot – but academic writing is a totally different thing. Fortunately, the Uni offers ELAS [English Language for Academic Study] workshops which were specifically designed for non-native English students. Having attended the workshops, I can confidently say that my academic writing skills have significantly improved. Although the process was not easy, it was a challenge I eventually thrived on. 

I am not the brightest student in class nor the most talkative person. Yet I am humbled to announce that I will be graduating with a distinction. I particularly owe this to Rachel Cole, my academic writing tutor from the Sussex Centre for Language Studies for her generous support and encouragement.  

Lastly, I want to express my gratitude for the privilege of calling Sussex my home. I am forever grateful.
